[comp.terminals] DECserver multisessions on PC emulators???

d001ucsac@bsu-ucs.uucp (Stephen P Kendall) (04/03/91)

Does anyone know of any PC terminal emulators that implement DEC's MSC
(multiple session control) protocol for multiple simultaneous sessions
through a DECserver 500? Although I've never seen one, I'm told that
DEC VT330/VT340/VT420 terminals have this feature. A specs sheet for KEA's
ZSTEM 2.3 seems to imply that it has it, but it is not specific.

If not, someone should implement it for those of us who would like to have
multiple *SIMULTANEOUS* sessions (not switched), do not have one of the
aforementioned DEC terminals, do not have an {Ether|DEC}net connection, and
do not have an X-terminal of any kind. If I had the MSC specs and source to
a suitable emulator to hack on, I'd be tempted to give it a shot myself.

Apologies if this is not in the group's domain. I do not believe that
comp.terminal.emulators exists; I have never seen it if it does.

And thanks for any and all information about PC term packages that might
implement this (or, in the alternative, that none do).

The protocol you referred to is called TD/SMP (terminal device/session
management protocol) and is patented by Digital Equipment Corporation.

I guess you'll see PD versions of the software when the patent runs
out.
