[comp.terminals] Telnet 3270 for UNIX.

We are in the process of setting a new program whereby students at our
school will access a computer running VM/SP, CMS etc at another
school via the internet. At present, we use TN3270 on a PC to allow
them to access this other system. But, to do this, they must be at
school, on one of the PCs with internet access. We would like to
permit them to also access this remote mainframe by modem. We thought
perhaps they could login to our UNIX system, then telnet to the remote
machine. But, when we do this, the remote system seems to be in some
kind of line mode, and no screen oriented commands work.

So, is there some kind of telnet 3270 for the UNIX that we can use?
The only one I've heard of seems to require X-windows, which isn't
really what we had in mind. Failing that, is there some way we can
convince a mainframe running VM/SP and CMS to allow use of a vt100
instead of 3270?
