[comp.terminals] Terminal Suggestions

jseymour@medar.com (James Seymour) (05/09/91)

Hi Netters,

Can't help but wonder how many times y'all have seen this :-) ...

We're looking for suggestions on what to go with for terminals to use
in-house (and possibly to be recommended to end-users of our turn-key
systems).

We have been using Wyse 99GTs for two or three years and have been
unhappy with them for several reasons: they have an unacceptably high
failure rate (the biggest reason by far), they sometimes lose their
minds for no apparent reason, and some of the emulations do not *seem*
to be correct. Lastly, we're not happy with the support (?) we've
gotten from Wyse. Why (you may be asking) have we been using them in
light of this? A year or two ago I went on the Great Quest For The
Perfect Terminal (also to replace the 99GTs). The Quest failed.
Out of all that I looked at, the only two manufacturers that looked
promising were Liberty and Falco. Without going into details (most of
which I no longer remember anyway), they both failed to measure up.
In short, the 99GT ended-up being the least of the available evils.

Now we recently purchased a couple of Wyse 160s. One of them a paper
white version. The paper white one arrived with a tilted display that
barely filled the CRT area and after less then two (2) weeks, it is
dead. I hesitate to condemn an entire product line on the basis of a
single failure, but with the failure rate we've been experiencing with
the 99GTs (and what I've *heard* about Wyse 60s), we'd like to once
again explore alternatives.

So here's what all this has been leading up to: we're looking for a
terminal that has (amongst other things):

. multiple emulations (incl. vt220, ANSI, and preferably incl.
      graphics)
. an "extended PC-AT" keyboard layout available
. amber and paper white versions with overscanned video.
. fully programmable keyboards (incl. ESC and DEL keys).
. two serial ports, selectable from the keyboard
. in the $500.00 price range
. a reasonably low failure rate
. good support from the manufacturer

BTW: we're mainly using these things on UNIX/Xenix systems of various
flavors.

An associate has suggested looking at C-Itoh. Any experiences with
them anyone cares to relate?

Because of some recent new hires and Wyse terminal failures, we need to
find something to buy pretty quickly, but we don't want to just jump at
something.

Thanks in advance.
