[comp.mail.uucp] DEAD being misused in map entries

pleasant@rutgers.rutgers.edu (Mel Pleasant) (08/02/87)

Please be aware that, in the link description section of a pathalias map
entry, the weight "DEAD" is a misnomer. DEAD should be used when a link
from your system to another is *temporarily* out of order and only when you
expect it to return at some point in the not to distant future. If your
map entry lists DEAD links which you believe for all practical purposes are
really never likely to work again, you should post an update with such
links removed. If you happen to know that a DEAD link references a site
that doesn't exist anymore, you should inform us of this fact. Be aware
that in so doing, we will remove all references to the site in the entire
database. Because of this, we will accept such notification only from
listed System Administrators and others well known to the UUCP Mapping
Project.
