[comp.mail.uucp] Why does UUCP "HANDSHAKE FAILED" when calling a 3B2?

jbs@eddie.MIT.EDU (Jeff Siegal) (03/04/88)

Can someone explain this, or suggest what I might do to fix it? I'm
using 4.3 BSD UUCP.

Here is the debugging info:

root wendy (3/3-11:32-22404) SUCCEEDED (call to wendy )
imsg looking for SYNC<%x\20>
imsg input<Shere=wendy\0
Using \0 as End of message char
>got 11 characters
omsg <^PSmit-eddie -Q0 -x9>
imsg looking for SYNC<\20>
imsg input<RLOGIN\0>got 6 characters
msg-RLOGIN
root wendy (3/3-11:32-22404) FAILED HANDSHAKE (LOGIN)

Thanks for any help.

It means that the 3B2 does not have your login name in its USERFILE (if it is
an old machine) or Permissions (if it is running Basic Networking Utilities.)

The key is the reply to the initial handshake. It should be:

	ROK

Other things that you might see:

	RCB
		Callback Required
	RLCK
Lockfile problem -- attempting two calls at the same time

	RYou Are unknown to me
4.3BSD and HoneyDanBer only: means that your hostname is not
in the remote's L.sys or Systems file.
	RLOGIN
SVR2, HoneyDanBer, Ultrix: means that your login name is not
in the remote's USERFILE or Permissions file.

[Hey Spaf, when are you going to add this to the list of "most frequently asked
questions on the Usenet" ? :-)]

As far as I'm concerned, remove the :-) from the last line above and do
just that !!! I know many of you folks out there have access to the
source code but many (like poor old me and the other Apollo workstation
users) don't. Having this sucker on-line would be a great aid.
(for example, it will probably help me fix a certain site I'm trying to
get connected to who can't get his UUCP to dial out and I can't get in
because I get one of the messages CSG explained above).
