In playing with a Telebit modem, I note that if ever something kills the call during data transfer, such as a line-drop, UUCP is much too forgiving in terms of the number of retries allowed, and the timing of the retries. It seems to go through a sequence of 10 retries spaced 2,4,6,8,10,...20 seconds apart at the MINIMUM. I have seen it sit there for 15 minutes without getting any data transferred, before it finally gives up on the call and hangs up. This wouldn't frustrate me except that sometimes I'm paying long distance charges when this is going on! Is there some subtle setting I can make in L.sys or elsewhere to take care of this? While we're at it, it sure would be nice to tighten up the expect- send timing in L.sys login scripts; that wastes a lot of time on non- successful calls also!
