[comp.mail.uucp] Why UUCP is so popular and widspread ?

Hello,
        UUCP is supposed to be one of the most widespread networks connecting
different continents. I studied the UUCP mehanism from some AT&T's Unix
manual.I am a visitor from India (to CMU).  I am curious about linking some of
Unix machines
at our Institute (Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay) to the outside
world.Can any body suggest me some references, pointers etc ?
