[comp.mail.uucp] Sun isn't alone in having problems

rja@edison.GE.COM (rja) (08/10/88)

After reading about all the trouble Paul Vixie was having, it was
interesting to have trouble reaching him myself.

  The culprit: decuac.dec.com

The reason: decuac bounced mail from me headed for palo-alto.dec.com
and claimed that palo-alto.dec.com doesn't exist.
The reply-to: field was used to generate the address.

The solution: I mailed the whole thing to vixie.UUCP

Mind you I'm not defending Sun or attacking DEC. Reality is that the
mail system isn't perfect yet and helpful pointing out of problems and
having the responsible people respond to problems improves the system.
I'm sure decuac will fix things and hope that Sun will try to upgrade
their in-house software as David Herron @ U.Ky has suggested -- even if
they don't make it a product yet.

Decuac has a few problems telling the difference between an internal SMTP/IP
site and an internal MAIL-11/DECNET site. As a solution to this, I've fixed
my news transport to pretend that everything comes from decwrl.dec.com, which
is reachable on both IP and DECNET so it isn't a problem anymore.

It took a while to figure out what was going on. Sorry for any inconvenience.

This is very interesting to read. You toss it out, off the cuff, casually,
as though "vixie.UUCP" is something any decent MTA should know how to reach.

I happen to agree with you. It's just that most of the Internet thinks we're
both nuts. I'm changing my various .signature files to "vixie.uu.net", and
soon I'll be "vixie.sf.ca.us". But it's nice to see "vixie.UUCP" tossed
around as though it meant something. Maybe it will someday.
