[comp.mail.uucp] uucp between BSD4.2 and Sys V

jonathan@cs.keele.ac.uk (Jonathan Knight) (10/01/88)

Hi there. I'm trying to set up a mail feed between an Ultrix 1.2
machine (soon to be 2.2) and a PC AT running Microport Sys V release 2.
I can get the PC to call Ultrix and do uucp stuff but not visa versa.
The log file has the entry HANDSHAKE FAILED (LOGIN) on the Ultrix
machine for each attempt. When I look at the history of logins on
the PC I see that the login actually worked but the Ultrix machine
disconnected immediately.  Any ideas?

Does your Sys V system run HoneyDanBer UUCP ? (Files in /usr/lib/uucp look
like Systems, Devices, Permissions etc.)
Then your Permissions file is probably wrong. Insert an entry:

MACHINE=name-of-your-Ultrix-system \
LOGNAME=userid-Ultrix-uses-to-login \
READ=/usr/spool/uucppublic \
WRITE=/usr/spool/uucppublic \
REQUEST=yes \
SENDFILES=yes \
CALLBACK=no \
COMMANDS=rmail:rnews

Good luck.

I've had BSD<->SysV problems, usually cured by getting the calling
system to call at the same number of bits and parity as the recipient. I
finally wrote a kludge to change the line on the recipient end before
starting uucico, for system which really insisted in calling the way
they wanted it.
