[comp.mail.uucp] user@host.mydomain != user@mydomain

kai@uicsrd.csrd.uiuc.edu (10/26/88)

Our uucp domain "kai.com" was registered over a year and a half ago through
the "uucp zone" at stargate, with kailand (kailand.kai.com) being our
gateway, and uiucuxc (uxc.cso.uiuc.edu) our internet forwarder.

I recently changed our sendmail.cf so that outgoing mail no longer hides the
local hostnames. Now mail comes from "pat@kailand.kai.com" instead of just
"pat@kai.com". This was done so accounts and/or aliases for everyone don't
need to be kept at the gateway host.

The problem occurs when systems that speak UUCP directly with kailand send
mail to 'user@host.kai.com", it ALWAYS routes through the internet forwarder,
instead of using the direct uucp link. This can introduce several days delay
in mail. Mail to "user@kai.com" goes through the direct uucp link.

One of those system admin's that we deal with pointed out strange behaviour
with pathalias, where "kai.com" is equated with "kailand", but ".kai.com"
isn't. Is a simple uucp map fix all that is required? We don't keep maps,
since uiucuxc is such a smart-host (polite too - no forced rerouting!), so
I don't know our site appears in them.
