[comp.mail.uucp] Running smail With sendmail on a Sun 4

[I am reposting this as I am not sure if it made it out the first time.]

We are trying to install smail 2.5 on a Sun 4 (SunOS 4.0) with sendmail.
We cannot get either the sendmail.cf that comes with the Sun or the one
generated by make.cf.sh to work properly. In one case, it does not search
the /etc/hosts file to find a local connection via Ethernet, it just hands
the message to smail, which finds a machine with the same name a few uucp hops
away. In the other case, it tries to treat every machine name given it as
a local host, and spits out an error message when it cannot find it in
/etc/hosts! Our presumption is that, when given a message ID of "machine!user",
it should first look to see if it is accessible via Ethernet, and, if not,
then give it to smail to try and resolve externally, and the same for addresses
of the form "user@machine", "user@machine.uucp", etc. Right? Wrong?

If anyone has successfully accomplished this, we would be grateful for any
assistance.
