[comp.mail.uucp] Compressed Batched mail - does it exist?

Is there a patch for smail 2.5 which allows compressed batched MAIL
like what is available for news?  This could save MUCH online dialup
time, especially for LARGE volumes of mail.  

Is there perhaps a program outside of rmail which does this?
