[comp.mail.uucp] uucp maps were received here trashed

chip@chinacat.Lonestar.ORG (Chip Rosenthal) (03/13/90)

The following uucp maps were received at chinacat trashed:

    u.can.1	<Mar.12.10.55.18.1990.21293@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.can.2	<Mar.12.10.55.51.1990.21380@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.deu.3	<Mar.12.11.02.53.1990.22404@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.dmk.1	<Mar.12.11.03.42.1990.22494@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.gbr.1	<Mar.12.11.09.33.1990.23231@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.gbr.3	<Mar.12.11.10.31.1990.23370@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.isl.1	<Mar.12.11.15.50.1990.24036@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.usa.ca.3	<Mar.12.11.37.24.1990.26248@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.usa.ca.4	<Mar.12.11.38.45.1990.26354@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.usa.ga.2	<Mar.12.11.49.33.1990.27567@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.usa.il.1	<Mar.12.11.50.43.1990.27682@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.usa.ma.2	<Mar.12.11.54.16.1990.28110@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.usa.ma.4	<Mar.12.11.55.36.1990.28269@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.usa.mi.2	<Mar.12.11.59.31.1990.28760@rutgers.rutgers.edu>
    u.usa.nc.1	<Mar.12.12.00.34.1990.28870@rutgers.rutgers.edu>

The symptom is that one or more newlines were inserted into these maps.
The only commonality I can see is that the insertions occur at word
boundaries -- never in the middle of a word. It is not long lines
triggering them.

The section of the path in common for all the bad maps is:

    chinacat!bigtex!texsun!newstop!sun-barr!cs.utexas.edu!...!rutgers!pleasant

It is not obvious where the problem occurred. Of the 142 maps currently
on chinacat, some of the not-obviously-bad maps have visited sites in
this path. Here is the breakdown of which maps traversed which hops (only
those hops in the paths of >=5 bad maps are included):

	 possibly  definately   hop traversed
	good maps bad maps by this map
	      127          15   pleasant -> rutgers
	      101          15   texsun -> bigtex
	      101          15   sun-barr -> newstop
	      101          15   newstop -> texsun
	      101          15   bigtex -> chinacat
	       60          15   cs.utexas.edu -> sun-barr
	       19           8   usc -> cs.utexas.edu
		3           6   rutgers -> usc

By the way, when I say "bad", I mean that pathalias gave a syntax error, and
when I say "possibly good" I mean that pathalias didn't complain about it.
The particular errors I received here are:

I'm afraid these trashed maps came from rutgers. I received several
of them directly from rutgers, others via paths that I know to be
okay.
