[comp.mail.uucp] FSUUCP 1.1 Release

cambler@polyslo.CalPoly.EDU (Fubar) (08/29/90)

Greetings.

I apologize profusely for the delay in getting FSUUCP 1.1 into distribution.
There was a problem with the documentation. It's been completely rewritten
by a new person (aren't you glad I'm not doing it anymore? :-)) and chopped
up into seperate files by topic.

The Version 1.1 ZIP is being prepared and will be ready tomorrow night. All
mailers we have received to date will go out in the Thursday AM mail.

FSUUCP11.ZIP will be uploaded to SIMTEL20 and polyslo.calpoly.edu Thursday
afternoon. It is required that I take the disk onto campus because uploads
over phone lines to polyslo are unreliable.

There is a host of new features and an improved transfer mechanism. The
system has been tested on many flavours of UNIX(tm). As always, your milage
may vary, but we anticipate no major problems.

The next release will be 1.2. Cutoff for bug reports and wishlists is set
at 29 September. There is no correlation between this and the fact that
the 4th season of Star Trek The Next Generation starts on this date. None at
all. :-)

The only caveat left in this version is the fact that the checksum routine
is having some troubles. Should the checksummer decide that it is unreliable
(which is happening often) it will kick out and transfer packets unchecked.
Interestingly, I have had maybe 1 or 2 out of hundreds of packets go bad
in which the xor failed to catch the error in the circumstance that the
checksum died. If anyone has a CLEAR understanding of the checksumming
protocol for 'g' (eg. pad with nulls? checksum the nulls? checksum the
headers for the envelope?) PLEASE send me some mail.

All in all, I'm pretty proud of this release, it's loads better than 1.01
in my opinion. As always, your comments are appreciated, this software is
for the user community!

MAJOR INSTALLATION CHANGE:

There is now an automatic installer. When receiving the ZIPfile, unzip it
with recursive directories onto a FLOPPY disk. This will create an
installation disk as well as a backup. Then, execute the "fsinstal.exe"
program from the floppy.

Here is the standard fsuucp.reply message for those interested in getting
fsuucp:

--- cut here

The usual ways to get it still stand with one change (noted below). You can:

1. get it via anonymous FTP from polyslo.calpoly.edu. The file name will
be fsuucp11.zip, not to be confused with fsuucp10.zip, which is the 1.01
   version.

2. Mail me the $35 shareware registration and I will mail you back a disk
with a registered copy. Please specify:

   A. 3.5" 720K
   B. 5.25" 1.2Meg
   C. 5.25" 360K with the software ZIPped, ARCed or otherwise. I have all
      major compression utilities.

3. Mail me a self-addressed stamped disk mail with either formatted 5.25"
1.2 Meg or 3.5" 720K or 1.44Meg disk. ***NO 360K DISKS WITH THIS METHOD***

The software has grown beyond 360K with the new installer and documentation.

Note that if you choose method 3, you DO NOT need to send the registration
until/if you decide to use fsuucp.

COMING IN VERSION 1.11 (too late for this release):

Improved news reader functionality
Interface for use with the PC-SMAIL package
Even better documentation (we keep the writers in a closet and don't ever
  let them out)

And, as always, any bug reports or wishlists will be addressed for future
releases.

Coming in November: FSBBS 2.0, Fubar Systems BBS with FSUUCP 1.x integrated
into the package, plus local boards, DYM, games, files, textfiles, complete
full-screen sysop utilities, termcap capability, scheduler, complete
development package available, fully expandable, pant pant pant. All this,
and shareware too.

ADDRESS FOR SENDING DISK:

(805) 54-FUBAR -- BBS (FSBBS 2.0 prototype system)
(805) 544-9234 -- Voice support

Please note that these phone lines are being worked on and may not be
available at all times. The BBS is undergoing beta testing and may be
periodically down. FTP is still your best bet to get fsuucp.
