[comp.mail.uucp] problems with a simple uucp connection

Hello,
I have a question to ask as a favor..
I know that you also set up UUCP systems, so I was wondering if you know
what the following error means in /usr/spool/uucp/LOGFILE ...
-----
ken arc (11/19-17:42-296) XQT QUE'D (rmail vecvax!ken )
ken arc (11/19-17:43-297) using device (tty06, fd= 7, brand = hayes - generic)
ken arc (11/19-17:43-297) SUCCEEDED (call to arc )
ken arc (11/19-17:43-297) OK (startup)
ken arc (11/19-17:43-297) REQUEST (S D.vecvaxb01EK D.vecvaxb01EK ken)
ken arc (11/19-17:45-297) BAD READ1 (expected 'S' got FAIL)
ken arc (11/19-17:45-297) FAILED (conversation complete)
ken arc (11/19-17:49-297) closed generic acu (fd=7)

[A friend and I are attempting to setup a connection and the direction from
him (arc) to me (ken) works but I get the above problem going the other
direction]

This type of thing happens from time to time and isn't considered serious
unless it happens all the time. Any number of things could affect
the line quality or robustness of the connection. Think of it as bad block.

That's exactly what I would've said. Reply and tell him it _does_
happen all the time, but only when you initiate the connection, and
your file is being sent. Also include the lines I sent you from _my_
log file (here they are again)

Uvecvax vecvax (11/20-0:05:59,6332,0) OK (startup)
Uvecvax vecvax (11/20-0:06:00,6332,0) REMOTE REQUESTED (vecvax!D.vecvaxb01EK
-> arc!D.vecvaxb01EK (ken))
ken vecvax (11/20-0:07:42,6332,1) IN SEND/SLAVE MODE (INPUT FAILURE)
ken vecvax (11/20-0:07:42,6332,1) FAILED (conversation complete)

Any ideas anyone?

We had very similar problems setting up a UUCP connection - We had no
problems when we were in master mode, but we were always getting bad
reads in slave mode. It turned out that our modem was set for XON/XOFF
flow control, and there was an XOFF character in one of the packets we
were sending, so incoming data was held by the modem, and it timed out.
Our modem required us to set about 3 parameters before XON/XOFF was
disabled entirely - some modems have parameters covering XON/XOFF
passthrough, etc.
