Which address are you trying? I've seen two floating around for some time -
their old class C (192.48.96.2) and a class B (137.39.1.2) that seems to be
on AlterNet (makes sense). ping only tries the first address it gets,
which on my host is the class B. I can't reach it, I suspect because it's
on AlterNet and I'm not. Haven't had that confirmed yet, though. The
class C address pings fine.

There is an invalid A RR (137.39.1.2) floating around for uunet.uu.net. We
listed it for a very short time late last winter and although we stopped
listing it, a number of other folks configured it into their servers. Other
name servers keeps infecting ours with the bad RR (a BIND feature ;-) and
we've never been able to get all the copies removed.

The problem should disappear very shortly when we install a second ethernet
board and both addresses are actually valid.
