Instead, the modem immediately transmits the plus sign to the other modem. It takes no special action until it sees that you have paused, sent three plus signs, and paused again. At the moment you're sending the plus sign, you haven't satisfied the requirement for a second pause so the modem transmits the data immediately. You can configure the character the modem watches for with the S2 register, and the amount of pause time required with the S12 register.
