[comp.mail.uucp] alarms and slow transfers

bill@unixland.uucp (Bill Heiser) (04/24/91)

About two weeks ago, I installed a third scsi disk on my 386 system.
During the install, a nasty dos virus on my dos boot disk containing
the scsi formatting tools corrupted the boot sector on my unix disk
(I run Esix Rev D). Anyway, to make a long story short, I had to
reformat, re-install the base system, and restore over it using cpio
backup tapes.

After that, my (INBOUND) uucp transfer rates dropped dramatically!
Outbound is still very good. The drop was roughly 50%. I notice
that I'm getting lots of "alarm xx" messages (alarm 1, alarm 2, etc).
I'm not sure if I got these before, but I don't think I did get
many. The receive light on the modem stops for 10 seconds or so,
then an alarm message pops up. (This is done using Uutry).

I installed the FAS driver a couple of days ago. Rates have improved
significantly (about 50% better than what they were when they
were at their worst). I still get lots of alarms. Rates are still
about 50% less than they should be (outbound is better than ever!)

This is on a 386/25, "standard 16450 UARTS", 8mb of RAM, 3 scsi disks and
scsi tape, Telebit Trailblazer modem with hardware flow control enabled.
I know I should try 16550AFN UARTS, but this doesn't explain the DROP
in transfer rates.

I don't know what, but something must have gotten trashed during
the restore of the cpio tapes. Anyone have any ideas before I dive
into a full re-install?

Thanks in advance,
Bill
