[comp.mail.uucp] availability of uucp for OS/2

rburns@cup.portal.com (Randy J Burns) (04/21/91)

Has anyone heard of a standalone or public domain version of
uucp that runs on MS OS/2? I've heard of an implementation of
unix utilities (including uucp) that sells for $500, but this
seem a bit steep to me.

Thanks.

There exists a package - uucp in msdos environment - "fsuucp" from
Fubar systems (sp?), or something like that. I have ftp'ed it from a
site with anonymous ftp (if you drop me a note, I will try to find
where from exactly). However, I did not get it going, yet. Any
comments about this package will be apprecated.

Not that I've tried it but I understand that UUPC version 1.10
will have full OS/2 support. For further information, try mailing to
help@kendra.kew.com or join the uupc mailing list (uupc-info-request@
sun.soe.clarkson.edu).

One of my downlines is embedded in just such a project. After scouring just
about everywhere has discovered that there isn't much available for OS2.
There is Waffle, FSUUCP, UUPC available, but all as DOS programs. These can
be operated in a DOS window within OS2, but are required to be in the fore-
ground. I suspect that RNEWS, RMAIL, and UUXQT could run in a background
window, but the actual connect and transfer (UUCICO) needs to be up front.

I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but I have yet to see OS2 do
anything useful outside the office automation functions like word processing,
spreadsheets and databases. You CAN get Maximus for OS2, and do a fido-link.
But if you're after net.news, then you'd have to run something to toss the
messages (mail & news) into fido-format. For this, you begin to talk Tim
Pozar's ufgate, no small utility...Plus, you're in the realm of Binkley or
some other frontend capable of discerning users from mail, and which kind
of mail (ie: uucp or Yoohoo).

If your heart is set on multi-tasking, you might have to consider XENIX or
something like that.
