[comp.mail.uucp] cc:mail -> e-mail

kod@alette.dk (Kwame Danquah) (04/05/91)

Can someone on the net who has successfully installed cc:mail's
Link to UNIX Mail please e-mail me. I have started installing one
between our cc:mail and a VAX/Ultrix system.

Thanks in advance.

I need to get in touch with someone on the net who has either implemented or
is about to use the cc:mail Link to the
UUCP Gateway System. It seems most people use the SMTPLink to connect
cc:Mail and e-mail, but I still believe there is someone out there who has
solve it the UUCP way.

Thanks in advance.

Ive been using a MHS-to-UUCP gateway based on UUPC/DCP for a month now.
Dont seem to be any problems.
Is there any interest ? How do the MHS-SMTP folk "Attach" binary files ?

I've set up such a system. It has been nothing but headaches from
the start. I don't think is has run for more than a week without
requiring some sort of manual intervention. This is _not_ a plug
and play solution. _This_is_a_very_bad_system_.

Oh, where to start....

1: The manual is horrible
2: CC:mail's technical support is very lacking.
3: The software is lacking basic uucp functionality
4: The software has bugs galore

It only took me (a Unix type person) and another (a PC type person)
2 days to configure the product. I've installed uucp on other
systems, and it usually takes about 1/2 a day at the most. This
was mostly because of 1 and 2. The manual covers mostly how to
configure cc:mail, not how to configure the gateway software. If
you've never set up a uucp system before, you probably won't be
able to using this manual as your only reference. If you don't
know anything about PC's, you probably will have a rough time
setting the gateway up. The manual spends a wopping 2 pages on
configuring the uucp system.

My basic gripes about the package are 3 and 4.

- cc:mail can only dial out, you can't dial in. therefore you must continually
poll your unix machine to see if there is mail waiting for you. This
would be fine if you could hardwire the pc to a unix machine, but
in that case, why not use the smtp option? If you have to use a
modem, and want reasonable response time you'll have some serious phone
bills from polling every 10 minutes.

- The script that calls the uucp code is a nightmare, it offers virtually
no flexibility. All it does is wait for some period of time and then
run uucico. If you want to do something else, you have to write a
script to do it. There is no concept of a Poll file or grades or
anything that you are used to.

- We configured the script to call once an hour. This required a major
  re-write.

- cc:mail often does call for a few hours, for no apparent reason (3 times or
  more a week)

- cc:mail's chat script often misses characters thrown at it, even at
9600baud! When it calls our SunIPC for example, it senses the login:
sends uucpX, but often misses the password: part. (about 1 in 10 calls)

- We get lots of failed transmissions, something that happens only once in
a blue moon with our other sites (each cc:mail call has a 25% chance of
failing, and we only transfer a few small mail messages an hour)

- The pc often gets wedged (2 times or so a month)

- The core of the package appears to be UUPC, the public domain
implementation of uucp. The support people (after you wait for
an average of an hour on hold...no they don't give you a call
number and call you back...) don't really know much about the
product, but generally try to be helpful.

----

I'd recommend using something else, like forwarding your mail via
the SMTP gateway (which I haven't used, but I can't imagine it
being any worse) to a Unix machine with uucp and having it dial
out. You probably could work around all of the above problems, but
should you have to? How much time should you be expected to spend
setting up uucp?

I have no affiliation with any PC mail system company, or anything to
do with PC's. I am simply a customer (albiet a very unhappy one) of
cc:mail.
