[comp.mail.uucp] FTP mail agents

sfb@NCoast.ORG (Stephen F. Bush) (06/26/91)

This is a summary of all the information I received about FTP mail
agents. I have not yet found a reliable one. If anyone can add to the
list, please do!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steve:
If by a mail agent you mean someone that will perform ftp for
you via email, I use a program that sits at bitftp@pucc.princeton.edu.
Just send a message with only the word help as the body and it will
send instructions. It seems to be a pretty good program, although at
times it can be slow (24 hrs), but at least you can perform limited
ftp'ing.

Good luck,
Tim

Please send me a copy of your compiled FTP MAIL list when you get it, along
with any instructions for use that you may be able to come up with.

I will return the favor if I have the opportunity.

thanks -

Hi Steve,

I'd appreciate it if you would e-mail a copy of the summary you compile.
I only have mail access too, and have been looking for the same thing.

Thanks

You might wish to try the mailserver (I think that's what you mean when
you say "FTP server" since you stated that you only had Internet mail) at
the University of Chicago. Get a copy of Computer Undeground Digest for
the address of the server.

Hi Steve,

I'm also interested in some ftp mail sites. Please let me know if you
find anything out. Also, if you've got a second, a simple ack of this
message would be appreciated.

Thanks and Good Luck!
Doug

I use "ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com" every day. It takes two or three days
to get your response, but it works.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have also not received any reply from ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com. Please post a
summary after collecting your replies

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

saw your post on the net about not getting responses from bitftp
or ftpmail. I also have the same problem as you and I was
wondering if anybody gave you some sort of response.

I can give you two suggestions (if you already don't know about
them). One is archie@cs.mcgill.ca and enter 'help' on the
subject line. The other one is uunet.uu.net!netlib, also
send help in the subjuct line or in the body of the message,
it should work. If you have any problems write back and I'll
will see if I can help you.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I did some checking around and came up with the address ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com
Send the help command there and see what happens. I have never used this
service so I can't guarrantee it's validity.

Steve,

I don't even have uucp/mail access to the Internet. And I don't know
where you can get an ftp mail agent. Nor do I know what one is.

However, according to the UUNET documentation that I read last weekend,
uunet will do any ftp work that you request. All you do is send a message
to the Postmaster at uunet telling them the name of the file and the
domain address of the Internet system holding the file.
They will get it for you. They will not "go on treasure hunts" looking
for the file, however.

Perhaps you are aware of this information. If not I hope that was of
some help to you.

Most of my mail bounces back to me because I don't use Internet addresses
nor do I have a smart mailer. Since you do have Internet access, I would
be interested in knowing what percentage of the e-mail that you
generate while in rn, readnews, or ... actually gets to the destination.
Thanks in advance.
