[comp.emacs] What is "gap" in buffer_text?

I have been reading the GNU Emacs sources and have a question.  What is a
"gap" in the context of the buffer_text structure (defined in buffer.h)?  I
cannot quite figure out what is going on.  Can anyone out there explain the
gap to me?
