On 29 Dec 86, RMS said
"It has been suggested that C-o be changed to insert the fill prefix
after the newline that it inserts."
He asked whether we like or dislike this idea. I like it.
1. For me, the change is a definite improvement. I have been using
the new version of C-o for the past week or so and find that the
change has made it much easier to write numbered paragraphs like
this one.
2. I used to write a paragraph like this flush left so that it would
refill properly when I edited it. Then I would indent the whole
paragraph and put in the number. This was awkward, to say the
least! When I wrote comments in my .emacs file, I wrote them first
without the leading semi-colons and then inserted them. Now it is
as easy to comment code as it is to write an ordinary paragraph.
3. Simple formatting like this is useful. Many documents, especially
mail messages, do not need the formating power of BoTeX or Texinfo.
I hope the new version of C-o will become the standard. The
documentation of the function could be changed to read as follows:
(defun open-line (arg)
"Insert a newline and leave point before it. If there is a fill
prefix, inserts the fill prefix after the newline that it inserts.
With arg, inserts that many newlines (with appropriate fill prefix)."
