[comp.emacs] compressed gnu emacs woes

stanonik@NPRDC.ARPA (01/21/87)

Hello,

We have had no luck uncompress'ing the edist ftp'ed from prep.
uncompress seems to always give up, complaining "corrupt input".
This has been happening for months (forever?). Are we the only
ones having this problem? (We're running 4.3bsd on a vax 780.)
Any chance prep is using something other than the compress distributed
with 4.3bsd? Maybe using some options?

Thanks,

Due to fixing a bug in ftp for 4.3 BSD, binary files may not transfer
properly between 4.2 & 4.3 BSD sites unless you do a "binary" command.
Even though it is documented, it is sort of obscure (for unix-to-unix
transfers at least), so you might have missed it.

I was never able to uncompress GNU Emacs in 4.2 using our uncompress.
I finally FTPed PREP's compress and that worked.

Oops! Binary mode, eh?

I'm not sure which version of compress was distributed with 4.3,
but you can get a working version from any mod.sources archive
(j.cc.purdue.edu for example).
