[comp.emacs] Printed GNU Emacs manuals

phr@PREP.AI.MIT.EDU.UUCP (02/10/87)

The printed copies of the latest (V18) edition of the GNU Emacs manual
have finally arrived, and all the backorders except for a few with
special requirements have been shipped. People who ordered manuals
and had to wait for them should receive them soon. People placing new
orders should have them filled promptly since we have a lot in stock
now. Our apologies to everyone who had to wait.

The size, appearance, and about 90% of the text are the same as the
V17 manual so if you already have one of those then you probably don't
need a new one.

Features of the Foundation-printed manuals include:
  Handy 7x9 size
Phototypeset and offset printed (very sharp looking)
Open-flat plastic GBC comb binding with tear-out reference card
Cover illustrated by Etienne Suvasa who may someday become famous.

You can also run off your own using the TeX sources for the manual and
the reference card, both of which are included in the Emacs distribution.

Differences from V17 manual: V18 Emacs features are incorporated into
the text; the reference card has been redesigned to be more useful and
to use TeX instead of troff; there is an "Emacs version 17 Antinews"
section so that V17 Emacs users can still use the V18 manual; and the
title of the manual is now printed on the plastic spine so you can see
it when the manual is on your shelf.

For ordering information, see the DISTRIB file that comes with GNU
Emacs or write mit-eddie!mit-prep!gnu. You can view the DISTRIB file
by running GNU Emacs and typing C-h C-d. Income from manual orders
supports the Foundation's development of more free software like GNU
Emacs.
