[comp.emacs] microemacs 3.8 for Macintosh

earleh@dartvax.UUCP (Earle R. Horton) (03/18/87)

I just got the first 7 parts of microemacs 3.8 from mod.sources,
and am expecting the next seven tonight. After getting the shar
files, I immediately "grepped" them for "Mac" and "mac." Finding
no mention of Macintosh, I conclude that the program does not
run on the Mac. A cursory examination of the files I have so
far indicates that the essentials having to do with porting to
the Macintosh (screen display, file access) are not too different
from 3.7, and that I should be able to get 3.8 working in a few
days (I ported 3.7 to the Mac). If you want microemacs 3.8 for
your Mac, get the shar files of the generic sources from mod.sources
and SAVE THE DOCUMENTATION, as I do not intend to repost the docs
when I post the program. I may post a couple of pages describing
what I have done to make the program run on the Macintosh, but I
will not post yet another emacs tutorial to the net.

Macintosh-specific details of what I plan to do follow: Since
I have access to a 512KE, a 512, and a Mac+, I will make sure
that the program runs on these machines. If you want it to run
perfectly on the SE or Mac II, this is not hard to get done: just
buy me one! I am planning to support printing--on my Tandy DMP-
110 and on my Silver Reed daisy wheel printer. I will put in the
ability to send initialization codes to the printer, set the baud
rate, etc. so that it may be possible to print on an ImageWriter,
but I wouldn't guarantee it. Again, there is an easy way to make
sure the program works with the ImageWriter (guess what?)

I will entertain suggestions and bug reports from my port of 3.7
for a few days, but I plan to start work in this project as soon
as I get the rest of the sources to 3.8.

I have tried several times to get in touch with the program's
author, Dan Lawrence, with no luck, so let me take this space to
thank him again for this fine program.
