[comp.emacs] microemacs under 64k

blarson@castor.usc.edu.UUCP (03/17/87)

I've seen several messages on this group implying that micro-emacs
could never fit on a 64kbyte system. One version I know of (based on
an early release: 2.0 or 3.0) does run on os9/6809 level 1. It does
have it's limitations: single window single buffer, maximum file size
about 16k. (Level 2 could probably up this to 24k or more.) This
doesn't answer the original request of one for cpm-80, especialy since
z80 code is probably 50% bigger than 6809 code. (If you can find a
heavily optimizing C compiler it might not be any bigger. I've never
heard of one that can handle all the quirks of a z80 though.) If you
are interested, it is available from the os9 users group.

There is a version of uEmacs on cpm-80 systems. Or at least there
must be. For the Kaypro 2, 4 and 10 there is a program called
Perfect Writer that looks *AMAZINGLY* like uEmacs. In fact, I knew
about Perfect Writer before I knew about uEmacs. I was surprised to
find the same (almost) program. PW is a commercial product. I'm not
sure about the legallities of this are, whether whoever wrote uEMacs
was asked first (hence the copyright notice at the beginning of the
3.8[bf] documentation??). Anyway, PW runs on a Z-80 CPM machine in
under 64k with multiple buffers, windows, etc. I am an unwilling
expert on it (my mother is writing a history dissertation on it!).
So it is possible.

My question is: in the uEmacs we just got (I have it for the ST,
and it's labelled 3.8f), there is a document called EMACS1.MSS. This
was formatted for a program that is *VERY* much like the one in
Perfect Writer. They both use the at sign (@) in front of commands,
etc. What formatter is this? Is it in the Public Domain or Shareware
or Free? I am very interested, I would much rather print from the ST
than the Kaypro.

Thanks in advance,

John Ogawa
