[comp.emacs] Oh where oh where is FSF ???

jeff@UMBC3.UMD.EDU.UUCP (05/27/87)

I was wondering the same thing. I tried to call their number but
got the message it had been disconnected.

To answer your question, the latest manual is dated Dec. 1986 and
describes version 18. You can still order it from FSF for $15 a
copy or a box of ten for $60.

Enclosed is an order form I received over the net.

		Free Software Foundation Order Form
			  February 11, 1987

All software and publications are distributed with permission to
copy and redistribute.

Quantity Price Item

________ $150	GNU Emacs source code, on a 1600bpi industry standard
mag tape in tar format. The tape also contains GDB
(the GNU source-level C debugger), MIT Scheme (a dialect
of Lisp), hack (a rogue-like game) and bison (a
		compatible replacement for yacc).

Currently our tapes are of Emacs version 17. We will
switch to Emacs version 18 when it is considered stable.
Version 18 tapes will contain a copy of the X window system
(a window system for bitmap displays written at MIT),
and GNU Chess (a chess playing program with an interface
to X), as well as the programs listed above.

_______ Please hold my tape order until version 18 is ready.

________ $15	GNU Emacs manual (~300 pages). These manuals are
phototypeset and offset printed, with illustrated covers,
GBC plastic ring binding that stays open flat, and a
		tear-out reference card.

Thus, a 1600 bpi tape and one Emacs manual come to $165.

________ $10 GDB Manual (~55 pages, side stapled.)

________ $10	Texinfo Manual (~30 pages, side stapled. Texinfo is
GNU's structured documentation system, included with
GNU Emacs. This manual describes how to write Texinfo
		documents).

________ $60	Box of six GNU Emacs manuals.

________ $1	GNU Emacs reference card. Or:

________ $5 Ten GNU Emacs reference cards.

Shipping outside North America is normally by surface mail. For air
mail delivery, please add $15 per tape or manual, $1 for an individual
reference card, or 50 cents per card in quantity ten or more.

Prices are subject to change without notice. Massachusetts residents
please add 5% sales tax to all prices.

________ Optional tax deductable donation

________ Total paid

I was dreaming when I said ten manuals for $60. I meant and should
have said 6 manuals for $60. Sorry. Also, the order form states
version 17. FSF is shipping version 18 manuals. I believe the prices
to be correct but you may want to double check with FSF before
you cut a PO.

My connection to the Free Software Foundation has always been out of some
space that they shared with Lisp Machines Inc at their Mass Ave address.
However, I believe that LMI is now going out of business and their space is
being taken over by ICAD, so this would explain the disconnected phone. It
may also mean that FSF's Mass Ave address is also defunct, although I'm not
certain if this address is the same as LMI's.

The December 1986 version 18 manual (fifth edition) does cover 18.41 in the
form of a chapter entitled "Emacs Version 17 Antinews", which describes the
diferences "for those of you downgrading from version 18 to version 17".
I've always gotten the manuals directly from FSF at their LMI location, but
you can also generate the manual from the Tex source provided in the GNU
distribution.  The file etc/NEWS is also included with the distribution;
this contains some more detailed description of the 18/17 differences. You
can just print this out or view it with C-h n while in Emacs.

Perhaps FSF, if they're listening, could inform us on the net of their new
phone number or address if indeed these have changed.
