Sorry to bother both Emacs lists with this, but it can't be as hard a problem as it seems to ... All I'm trying to do is produce a C program that can be run through vgrind with reasonable-looking output. Unfortunately, my experiments with 'tabify' and 'edit-tab-stops' and the like have been total disasters so far, and I have had zero luck making things line up for vgrind. I am sure it is because of my total lack of understanding of tabs in Emacs, because things like the following continue to puzzle me: I create a program file, with tab stops every 4 spaces. (Verified by 'describe-variable tab-stop-list'.) There really seem to be tabs, since the cursor jumps on C-f. I save the file and grep for tabs; sure enough, there they are. I 'untabify' the entire program, and the tabs seem to go away (cursor moves smoothly). I save the file again, grep for tabs, and -- oops, still got tabs! A second "experiment": I set tabs every 4 spaces over to column 40, and none after that. I 'tabify' the region, and -- again oops, there are still tabs being used past column 40. In my weak little voice, I cry "Help?". Seriously, thanx muchly to anybody who can point me to the right documentation, mode, oracle, ... And by the way, I am using GNU Emacs 18.44 on a diskless Sun 3/50. Thanx! Wayne Hathaway ultra!wayne@ames.arpa Ultra Corporation 2140 Bering Drive San Jose, CA 95131 408-922-0100
