Does anyone have a list of sites which support anonymous ftp of the edist files for gnuemacs? Thanks, Greg P.S. I know louie.udel.edu usually has the latest compressed version, but its version of 18.45.Z seems corrupt (it's smaller than the version on prep and causes uncompress to halt with an error).

The louie version is in fact shorter than the prep version. They were built independently, but that should still yield the same file size. I am not sure why this is. I just tried copying the file to another machine, uncompressing it, and running tar on it, and it all worked, with the last file in the distribution being dist-18.45/kept_editor.com (1875 bytes). Make sure when you ftp a compressed file, or a tar file, that you set the type of transfer to image. The BSD client will not do this for you. The command: type image will do the trick. I only burden the list with this comment because this little feature has made several people need to copy the whole file twice. What bandwidth we waste on this note, we gain in eliminated faulty transfers. The source for compress is stored on louie right along with the edist.tar file. It is in tar format, but is not compressed. anonymous ftp, any password. let me know about problems: Gary Delp

Speaking of distributions of gnu emacs, is anyone providing an anonymous uucp for distribution of gnu? ---Bob Amstadt bob@wiley.uucp {csvax.caltech.edu,trwrb.uucp}!wiley!bob

This comes up every 2 months or so; it must be time for me to post this again. I take anonymous UUCP for purposes of redistributing GNU emacs. My version is 18.36, which works well enough for me. (If someone wants to uucp me a later version, that's ok, too.) The distribution does not include the lisp/*.elc files, but you don't need them. Emacs will generate them for you as part of the build procedure. The instructions follow. Please observe the time restrictions. Have fun. Physically, we're at the Pentagon. We run a Sun-3/160, Sun OS 3.2 (4.2BSD). We have only one dialup port, so I must place some restrictions on network access. Within the need to support production work, we take anonymous UUCP connections. What you need: 1. A 2400- or 1200-baud autodial modem. 2. A UUCP that can use the modem. 3. Willingness to call Washington, DC. Note that PC-Pursuit serves the 202 area code. If you have access to that service, you can dial us through it. We have a variety of software packages available, so you should first fetch the file "Catalog". This will list what's available, and how to get it. Some people have reported file name difficulties with different versions of UUCP, particularly those supplied with System V. You may have to fetch "Catalog", "./Catalog", or "~Uanon/Catalog".
