I'm having some trouble with the sys$login:.emacs file on our VMS systems. I can't get version 18.47.2 to write that file. When I am pathed into sys$login, I can read the current file by typing "emacs .emacs" or by loading the file in using the ^X^F command. When I go to save it with any of the commands that I try (save-buffer, write-buffer,...) I get a file that looks something like $$save938483.emacs on my area. I could change the STARTUP.EL file, but I'd rather not since once you get the file made it works and there is lots of documentation pointing to it. I had a previous version of GNU emacs (17-VMS) that did not have this problem. Many VMS commands have a problem with a file that only has an extension. Copy and rename insist on migrating any first names so that you cannot easily rename something like X.TMP to .EMACS. So it might be reasonable to get rid of this strange (to VMS) name. EDT seems to be able to deal with extension files only ok, but I hardly know enough of that to be able to do anything!
