Does anyone know if there's a set of variables that can be set in GNUmacs to make it "scroll like vi does"? There's a user here who could be convinced to switch from vi if emacs didn't repaint and recenter the screen all the time. I've tried (setq scroll-step 1) and it works for line-at-a-time things but not pages. Help? "I think you should kill him and eat his brain," Mr. Frostee said quickly. "That's not the answer to *every* problem in interpersonal relations," Cobb said. *Software*, Rudy Rucker Wombat ihnp4!uiucdcs!ccvaxa!wombat, wombat@claudius.Gould.COM

Actually, I too know several people who would consider EMACS, but feel that it does an excessive about of screen painting. This is particularly true on a 1200 baud line. I've done hacks like cut the display in 1/2 if I'm at 1200 baud, but it doesn't cure the fact that there is a lot of cursor motion going on. Vi seems to handle this is a manner which is less objectionable.
