[comp.emacs] Problems with modems and emacs

I'm having a bit of a problem with my 4.3 system and my modems, and I
was hoping someone knew a fix.

We get people who dial into our system, play around a while, get into
emacs, and just hang up without logging off. The modem hangs up, and
their shell is killed, but emacs is still hanging around, and dtr
doesn't come back up on the modems. I'm not sure if this is a problem
exclusively in emacs, but that is the only place that I have noticed
it. Does anyone have any ideas?

We have experienced similar symptoms with one of our systems. Although our
lines are connected directly we also suffer from the problem of dtr not coming
up again rendering the line dead until physically reset or the the system is
rebooted. We did not associate the problem with people using non-standard
logout procedures but this could well be the case.
