[comp.emacs] Peculiar Mailing list behaviour ...

mlm@pur-ee.UUCP (Michael L. McLean) (05/09/88)

The previous mailing I sent out has a really weird problem with it.
First the situation. I sent the message to the info-gnu maling list
and to the comp.emacs mailing list. I read comp.emacs on USENET, but
on a different machine then I read mail on. I used the comp.emacs
mailing address to simplfy things on my end (no copy between machines
etc ..). The two addresses I used are

	info-gemacs:	uiucdcs!uunet!prep.ai.mit.edu!info-gnu-emacs
	comp.emacs:	rutgers!mit-eddie!uunet!cc5.bbn.com!unix-emacs

I got both of these form Gene Spaffords monthly postings.

Now the problem .... I recevied a copy of my letter from the gnu-emacs
mailing list (just as I anticipated), but the From address, and even
the Reply-To: address both got munged. Here is what I received ...

Note that the return address and from address are mlm@uunet ... I AM
NOT at uunet, I just used uunet as a gateway into ARPA net. Before I
get asked why I used a gateway after all purdue is connected to ARPA,
I will answer it. Undergrad students are allowed UUCP access
(cheaper) but not ARPA -- so in reality I am UUCP only.

Also -- I used two different addresses to uunet because my .mailrc was
out of date .. that peculiarity has been fixed. Does anyone have any
idea why my return address is listed as from uunet ????? Has this
transformation been happening to others ??

Thanks ..
