Ok thanks to the kind ftp spirits at osu-cis I've snarfed a copy of Gnews to
try and implement on my account -- only I don't think we have nntp -- whatever
that is, we're running the spooled version of news (B2.11). Ok so I tried using
the code in gnewspool.el like the header says but no go -- no .gnewsrc is
generated and it still trys (and fails) to access my local nntp site (I used
our machine name there). But it does leave me with a Gnews buffer and a
running process that needs to be killed when you exit emacs.
So the questions are:
Does anyone have a (relatively) short tutorial on how to set up Gnews?
Has anyone ever gotten the spooled version to work?
What is nntp and where can I take a look at the descriptions?
Where are the Gnu Emacs Lisp manuals/hints/pseudo-documents?
What ever happened to baby Jane?
I do have better than reading knowledge of lisp, however I have a much harder
time following the intended structure of Emacs than the code itself.
Thank you for Your support
steve

NNTP is the Network News Transport Protocol, used to carry and read news across an IP network. It's described in RFC 977, available in osu-cis!/u/public/rfc/rfc977.Z for your perusal. You'll find the current software in osu-cis!/u/public/nntp/nntp1.5.tar.Z if you'd like a copy. -=- Bob Sutterfield, Department of Computer and Information Science The Ohio State University; 2036 Neil Ave. Columbus OH USA 43210-1277 bob@cis.ohio-state.edu or ...!att!osu-cis!bob

Thanks to jr@bbn.com I now have a working copy of gnews running with the spooler, since I only received 2 replies to my plea I can assume that non-nntp usage is fairly rare (ihnp4!cray!hrp, jr, and me :-) steve. -- Steven D. After getting it working, I found that on a pretty heavily-used ethernet, it is faster to use nntp than to NFS mount /usr/spool/news from the same remote machine. -- /jr jr@bbn.com or bbn!jr
