Is there a version of Gnu Emacs that runs on IBM PC and compatibles? I got used to the power of Gnu Emacs (on Suns and Vaxes) and the EPSILON editor on the PC, though good, is no match. I know that because of DOS limitations one can only expect a subset of the REAL thing. Note: I have tried FREEMACS, but it is a limited subset of Gnu Emacs. Also, many of the commands don't behave in the same way as Gnu Emacs; for example list-buffers (which uses buffer numbers instead of buffer names) and file name completion. Babu Srinivasan

Well, Babu, I'm sorry to say this, but since the executable for Gnu Emacs compiles to about one megabyte on most machines, it's highly unlikely that you'd be able to run Gnu Emacs under MS-LOSS. Freemacs *does* do a few things differently than Gnu Emacs, and I consider those things broken. Instead of grousing, why don't you help me fix them so that everyone will benefit? By the way, Freemacs 1.5 now uses Gnu-Emacs-style buffer names and the lru algorithm. Freemacs 1.5 is available from finer free software distributors. :-) -- Despise Ronald Reagan now--avoid the rush.

I find Epsilon pretty reasonable for what it is. However I am constantly switching between machines and emacs's. Has anyone extended Epsilon with EEL to be more consistant with gnuemacs (Or any other popular emacs)? Does anyone have a startup file making gnuemacs behave like Gosling, Unipress, or JOVE emacs? Sacrilege I know, but our inquiring readers have to know. - Andrew Hudson abh0@bunny GTE Labs

The GNU distribution has gosmacs.el which should satisfy the Gosling/Unipress question for all but the most discriminating users: set-gosmacs-bindings: Rebind some keys globally to make GNU Emacs resemble Gosling Emacs. Use M-x set-gnu-bindings to restore previous global bindings. /jr jr@bbn.com or bbn!jr
