I modified GNU Emacs 18.50 so that it can handle Japanese characters, and the patches for GNU Emacs are distributed in Japan for free under the constraint of GNU Manifesto. I have already sent Nemacs to R.M.Stallman but not yet prepared a English document, so not yet posted it to comp.emacs. Using Nemacs under X-Window system is very comfortable. The latest distribution tape of X.V11R2 includes Japanese character font.
