[comp.emacs] Cut & paste between Emacstool and Sun windows.

m1tag00@fed.FRB.GOV (Tim A. Grunwald) (07/28/88)

At my work we use Gnu Emacs running on Sun workstations
(3/50's and 3/60's). Emacstool provides an excellent mouse
interface to Gnu Emacs.

The problem is the normal "put" and "get" commands used
to cut and paste between windows, does not work between an emacstool
window and any other Sun windows (suntools or cmdtools). Emacstool's
sun-get-selection and sun-select-region commands work as described,
but are not able to access the sunwindow shelf.

I will try and implement cutting and pasting between an emacstool
window and another Sun window myself. The suntools command get_selection,
retrieves the current sunwindow selection and seems like a good place to
get started.

But before I waste any time, has anyone found a way to cut and
paste between an emacstool window and another Sun window? I think this
would add a great deal of functionality to the suntools environment.

I agree, it is a pain that this important feature was left out of the
emacstool interface. But Stuff does work.

To move text to or from a Shelltool (or any text window with a "Stuff"
option in its menu):

Select the text you want to paste using the left and/or middle mouse
buttons. When it's highlighted, move to the window you want to paste
into and select "Stuff" from it's menu.

To move text to or from a window without a "Stuff" option:

Use Put&Get [or Stuff] to get it to a Shelltool (or any other window
that will support BOTH Stuff and Put&Get) and once the text is there,
use Stuff [or Put&Get] to it to the destination window.
