Adrian Clark writes he's having problems with these on VMS. I've been using Martin Minow's LZCMP and LZDCM on VMS for a while and have been entirely successful with them with tar.Z files pulled\ off prep. There are a few caveats: 1. Be sure you have fairly current versions (see Spring '88 VAX SIG tapes for these if needed). 2. Use -b switch on LZDCM from unix based files; then Sid Penstone's TAR reader will pull 'em all apart perfectly. If running VMS 5.0, you MUST get the newest LZCMP/LZDCM; the old ones will (I'm told) flat out fail. Problem is a realloc() on something that was just a static array originally. This happens for the usual VMS conditionalizations of Martin's sources, not in all possible builds. It should be easy to fix, but since the latest sources ARE available, it seems more reasonable to run those. I've still got VMS 4.7 running here and find the old .EXE modules run just fine. Read the comments in the src for HOW to run it. Operational mistakes are the usual problems. I don't think lzcmp or lzdcm are used exactly like compress/decompress must be under Unix.
