First of all this discussion belongs in the C language newsgroup and not in the EMACS newsgroup. Secondly, if my recollection is correct, part of the money to develop the C compiler - through the hiring of Len Tower - came from a foundation headed by the president of Ann Arbor Terminal. In a conversation I had with him many, many months ago he mentioned that the foundation gives money to develop programs and other works. As part of the requirement that the foundation be tax-exempt all works developed by the foundation had to be placed in the public domain. Hence, my question is Is the GNU C compiler in the public domain or does it have the same license as does the GNU Emacs editor? I think that this needs to be addressed because unlike Gnu Emacs which was written by Stallman with his 'nickel', part of (or all of) the GNU C compiler was written with "public funds". I apologize if this has been asked before and if this isn't really the appropriate news group, but I figured... Does the latest GNU EMACS release include the GNU C compiler (whatever *it* may be called)? I'm trying to track down the compiler for a friend, and myself - both to be run on a VMS system. Thanks for any help! Ken
