[comp.emacs] What about vi?

chad@anasaz.UUCP (Chad R. Larson) (08/31/88)

I don't mean to rekindle any flame wars or anything, but why are there
now TWO groups that carry handy hints, trivia and self-help
information for various emacs's, but none for vi? I'm sort of a power
user of vi and would be willing to help folks out with questions. By
the same token, I'm sure there are lotsa tricks I haven't stumbled on
and would enjoy reading about. What gives? Certainly it's not that
vi is so intuitive it doesn't need any explaining, and we all know how
lucid the manuals are. 'Spose there is enough interest to start a new
group?

The newsgroup comp.emacs has existed for years and years and has
always been a place for people to discuss emacs in any of its very
large number of incarnations.

The newsgroup gnu.emacs is very recent, gatewayed with the mailing
list info-gnu-emacs@prep.ai.mit.edu, and specific to development and
availability issues for GNU Emacs. There is a subgroup gnu.emacs.bugs
where people report on flaws and fixes to GNU Emacs.

I see no reason why there isn't a comp.vi (or, I think more
appropriately, a series comp.editors, comp.editors.emacs,
comp.editors.vi), so I suggest you head for news.groups and suggest
it if you're sufficiently motivated.

Close - it's gnu.emacs.bug, chosen to correspond with the name of the
mailing list. Similarly for the other four gnu.*.bug groups. Perhaps
gnu.*.bugs would have been more conventional in the Usenet world, but
now the die is cast...
