I cannot get GNUS 3.8 running. When I select a news group, it bombs with a "illegal function" error. The problem seems to be in nntp-header-number, but since I am a novice emacs hacker, I'm not sure what the problem is. -- Harry Edmon ARPA: harry@rainbow.atmos.washington.edu (206) 543-0547 UUCP: uw-beaver!geops!elnino!harry Department of Atmospheric Sciences BITNET: HARRY@UWARITA University of Washington

I've got the same problem but byte-compiling first nntp.el, then
nnspool.el and as the last file gnus.el in a fresh gnu-emacs with no
files in any buffer and no files loaded has helped.
I think when I first tried to compile I'd loaded some of the gnus
files before and at least gnus.el was read into an edit buffer.
