Has anyone modified GNU Emacs to run under MacOS using the Mac's window-managing interface? I am using a Mac II, and I have a port of GNU Emacs running under MacOS, but it doesn't use any of the mouse/window support like other Mac applications. If anyone has done this, or has any hints, I would appreciate hearing from you. I will probably do it myself, if no one else has already. Someone suggested to me that the X-windows code would be a good place to start. Thanks in advance. Bill Leonard Harris Computer Systems Division 2101 W. Where did you get the port of GNU emacs to the MacOS? I would dearly love to have a copy--even without mouse support. Can you tell me where to get it? I have added a bit of mouse support to FRED in Allegro Common Lisp, but I don't think I would be able to do it without the built-in toolbox calls. I am sure I am not the only one who would like a copy of GNU on a Mac II, so it would probably be worth answering this on the net. If you can send me mail as well, I would be grateful. --

Ooops, I'm afraid I mispoke. I don't have GNU Emacs on a Mac II, I have MicroEmacs. (A friend had told me he had one, but was mistaken about which Emacs it was.) Sorry. Anyway, I have gotten several "me too" responses, and one saying "good luck", but little else. If I make one, or find one, I will post a notice to the net. Still looking for something to steal. They differ in their approach to this, however. The source and binary to both are available. JOVE may be ftp'd from our site, but there may be a new version in a few weeks. Earle Horton (earle@eleazar.dartmouth.edu) has the info. on MicroEmacs. Anyone interested in JOVE should contact me. I also would like to see GNU on a Mac, b I haven't as of yet. There does exist a version of GNU emacs (18.50) which comes distributed with A/UX. However, you can forget about official versions coming from FSF for any apple equipment. RMS is upset about Apple's lawsuits over "look and feel" issues, and is boycotting Apple. (He does have a point, Apple's position is pretty bogus). Considering how difficult it is to get Emacs running under an unsupported UNIX System V machine (I did it with Unixpc - emacs 18.51), I think it will be a formidable effort to get it running under the finder. Good luck. "A computer is just a toy if it cannot run GNU Emacs" steve {ucbvax!trwrb!spp2!baur}
