[comp.emacs] emacs problems using 7 bits/even parity setup

mms@bnlux0.bnl.gov (Morris Strongson) (09/27/88)

We normally connect to our Unix system using 8 bits, no parity. However,
in order to test something out, we tried 7 bits, even parity. The change seems
to have little effect on the running of the system, except in using emacs (vi
and jove seem to work fine). The problem occurs in using ^B on the first
line of the file and attempting to go back before the start of file. After
beeping at the attempt, emacs gets out of synch on the screen, and displays
DEL (solid box) characters sporadically. I don't think they get into the
file, but they obscure the editing process. Is this familiar to anyone?
If so, is there anything we can do to cure it? Thanks in advance.
(Note: we are running either 18.49 or 18.51).
