Earlier, I posted a message complaining that uncompress.el wouldn't do write-protected files for me, and that the obvious fix didn't help. Well, I looked into it further and discovered an apparent problem with the tcsh. If I bind shell-file-name to "/bin/sh" (and also bind buffer-read-only to nil) around the call to shell-command-on-region, everything works. However, if I leave shell-file-name set to "/usr/local/bin/tcsh", my usual shell, it doesn't work. The fix for me is to do both bindings, and maybe I'll keep looking and find the real problem. Hope this is useful to someone else. pf Paul Fuqua Texas Instruments Computer Science Center, Dallas, Texas CSNet: pf@csc.ti.com (ARPA too, sometimes) UUCP: {smu, texsun, cs.utexas.edu, im4u, rice}!ti-csl!pf
