I have been using GNU emacs 18.52, and have found that it is upsettingly slow when used on SUNs with color frame buffers (386i cgthree, 3/160c cgfour) because of its tendancy to try and scroll things backwards when moving through text. The --**-Emacs:----- line jumps up the screen very slowly, then it eventually scrolls back down and fills in the changed info on the screen. I can see why it would do this: On older serial (9600 baud) terminals it would be faster to try and use escape sequences to move lines around the screen then to redraw the same line in a new position. But, on the color SUNs the scroll routines are much slower than the character draw routines. Is there a mode I can set, or documented change to the source code to fix this problem? You must be using Emacs either on the raw console, or in a terminal emulator window. Whether you use X10, X11, NeWS, or SunView, GNU Emacs has a native interface to the window system that is much more intelligent than that of a general terminal emulator beneath an Emacs that's trying to do its best with the termcap description. Use Emacs in its own window, and you'll likely be pleased with its functionality and performance.

There is no cgfour frame buffer available for 3/160Cs. You probably have a 3/160C + cgtwo or a 3/60C + cgfour. 1. Use a termcap entry which has the al and dl (insert and delete line) capabilities removed or nulled out. 2. Turn /Tty/Retained off. -- David DiGiacomo, Sun Microsystems, Mt. I'm having similar problems with emacs ... when trying to scroll more than one line, and less than one page (or window-height) emacs throws the mode line, and everything below it, up the screen, and then inserts the new text. Unfortunately, for some reason when it's trying to insert the new text, it garbles it, and throws me into an incremental search. I suspect this is something to so with C-s and C-q being used for flow control. I've observed this behaviour on adm3e-br's and tvi's connected to Sun 3s and Sun 4s. What can I as a user do to fix this, and what should I tell my super-user to do (sensible suggestions only :-) Phil W -- (__) (oo) Phil Wilkins, friend of cows, can be contacted thus ... /-------\/ Email: pjw@cs.warwick.ac.uk / | || Snail: Phil Wilkins c/o CS Department * ||----|| University of Warwick, Coventry ~~ ~~ CV4 7AL
