[comp.emacs] character mapping

I use gnuemacs 18.53. I am looking for a way to change how characters
are translated for display. For example, non-printing characters show
up as either ^letter for control characters or \octal for
meta-characters. I'd like to be able to control this process for all
characters so I can, for example, display whitespace visibly (spaces
become .s, tabs become -s etc.), or display binary files in a readable
format (everything shows up as two hex digits). Is this possible from
elisp, or has someone come up with something similar? Thanks muchly,

Scott
