[ I suspect this message will prove unnecessary (the transition looks
smooth so far), but to save questions it is worth noting. ]
The name prep.ai.mit.edu has been re-assigned to an IBM-RT whose
Internet number is 18.71.0.38. This change is already reflected in
the Domain Name System, and will be made shortly to the Host Table
issued by the NIC at SRI.
This machine will be the ftp server and mail list address for Project
GNU as the old prep.ai.mit.edu was. User accounts are not available
on the new prep.ai.mit.edu. The machine is ran by Project Athena at
MIT. The GNU Project thanks the Athena staff and management for
providing the service.
This machine is a gateway closer to the NSF backbone, so ftp users may
see an improvement in transfer rates. GNU also have considerably more
file space on this machine than on the old prep.ai.mit.edu.
The old prep, a Vax 11/750 running 4.3bsd/nfs has been honorably
retired from service. Its Internet numbers were:
128.52.22.14
128.52.32.14
128.52.14.14
and are currently inactive.
