I use and like GNUemacs on Sun and Vax. I'd like an emacs for my PC which is most like GNU. What should I get? All the PC Emacses can be configured to work like Gnu, in terms of having the same key bindings. mg has as its goal Gnu compatibility, so certain "little things", like the exact format of the mode line, and the exact wording of some messages, tends to be more similar. It's partly a question of what you like about Gnu. If you like the builtin command and filename completion and help, I suggest that you try Jove. If you like the fact that it's implemented on top of Lisp, you lose, but Freemacs gives much the same advantage. It isn't Lisp, but the implementation philosophy is similar. Freemacs is also very fast. Its main disadvantage is that you can't edit files bigger than 64K.

The last time I checked, most of the micro sized emacses had one very serious failing: rebinding the incremental search key. In most micro sized emacs you can rebind the initial isearch command to some other key. The problem comes when you want to continue a search: almost every one of them has HARD-CODED ^S for repeating the same search. My pet peeve. In my experience, Freemacs from grapes.clarkson.edu is far and away the most GNU-like emacs for the PC. I use both GNU and Freemacs everyday and rarely notice any differences. As I remember, the author considers any difference to be a bug! (I guess I should take time to report the differences I DO notice, eh? :-) James E. Ward f0057@uafhp.uucp

Yes! I only fix those differences that people complain about. If YOU don't
complain (or fix it yourself), I won't fix it. I am always willing to
accept enhancements.
