[comp.emacs] GNU Emacs newsreader survey

kjones@talos.UUCP (Kyle Jones) (06/21/89)

[ Per Abrahamsen pointed out that many who do not use rnews would
probably kill the thread "Re: How do I use rnews ?", which contained
my original posting regarding the survey. So this is a repost with an
appropriate subject line. If you have already participated in the
survey, you do not need to do so again. ]

I'd like to conduct an informal net survey. If you read news under GNU
Emacs please send me a note simply stating which newsreader you use. I
will summarize the results in a few weeks.

Here are the results of the newsreader survey I began around three weeks
ago. The original article was psoted 19 June to comp.emacs and
gnu.emacs. It expired 11 July, but the responses continued to trickle
in, so I waited until they stopped.

   Newsreader # of responses
   -----------------------------------
   GNUS 140
   Gnews 48
   rnews 28
   batmail 1
   RMAIL (hacked) 1
   vn.el 1

I also received one response for "terminal-emulator + rn + emacsclient".
While not exactly what I had in mind, it's a clever idea. RMAIL made a
surprise appearence here also. Someone has actually hacked RMAIL into a
newsreader. There were other RMAIL responses but only one indicated
that RMAIL actually went to the news spool for articles; the others used
RMAIL for reading mailing lists.
